Keep Indianapolis Beautiful

KIB reached out to Achieve for guidance on the NeighborWoods Initiative and their fundraising efforts.  Achieve conducted a program review with a focus on both donor and volunteer engagement in the NeighborWoods program.  Interviews were conducted with key philanthropic leaders, corporate executives, and volunteers to understand their motivations and interest in the initiative.

It was discovered that the challenges NeighborWoods and the development department faced, were a result of board engagement, a strong focus on corporate engagement, and a loosely defined strategic direction.

Achieve developed a clear path for the organization to ensure success.  First, Achieve coached key leadership to revise the strategic plan to account for more than internal operational changes.  Key questions concerning what the organization wants to address in the community over the next 3 years needed to be answered.  With guidance from Achieve during strategy sessions with key leadership, a new direction was established that will guide the success of NeighborWoods and other initiatives KIB will drive in the Indianapolis community.

Achieve then worked closely with the board to develop systems for engagement.  In the past, the board was asked in group settings to help on programming and fundraising.  Through individualized plans of engagement and the creation of fundraising portfolios, the board is bringing in new resources to meet the needs of the organization and it s new direction.

While KIB was highly successful in driving corporate funds to support its mission, the organization was not maximizing its potential from individual donors.  Achieve developed new donor cultivation processes to heighten engagement in the programs and awareness of the organization’s strategic direction.  Based on new systems to actively pursue individual donors, the organization has been successful in enhancing its relationships with donors that have in the past only heard from the organization during solicitation time.

Outcome:  With the support of Achieve, KIB has a clear direction for program and community impact related to its mission.  The board is engaging and accepting their role as a KIB evangelist and connector for resources.  With a new focus on individual giving and a clear path for donor engagement, the organization is reaping the rewards of new donors even in a time when philanthropy has slowed.
