Day 2 at NCVS: Learning about Millennials

My favorite session today was Demystifying the Millennial Volunteer, led by Derrick Feldmann and Kari Saratovsky. Super informative and surprising, helping me to understand how and why GenY get involved in service. You know the session is good if the room has a full audience, despite an overlapping happy hour with free drinks. (A painful decision for me, but the right one!) Here are some of the take-away lessons.

It was only a postcard, but it caught my eye. A direct mail piece from a nonprofit organization, its sharp graphics and design enticed me to read it. Its well-written copy invited me to visit the organization's Web site to donate. Impressed, I decided to check out the organization.

Copying Others' Tactics Won't Always Pay Off

I remember it vividly: About nine years ago, the executive director of the organization I worked for came back from a board meeting and announced, “I have directive.” He then explained that one of our board members had described a recent article about a not-for-profit that had raised $15,000 online.
